Dear colleagues,

we are pleased to announce the workshop “Theory and Modelling in Photonics”, which will be held at the Physics Department “A. Volta” http://fisicavolta.unipv.it/  , University of Pavia, Italy, from 11 to 13 April 2012.

This is the second workshop of Initial Training Network PROPHET (Postgraduate Research on Photonics as an Enabling Technology) http://www.prophet-itn.eu/   funded by EU-FP7 through Marie Curie actions. Photonics, the generation and manipulation of light, is an important enabling technology for a diverse range of application areas. PROPHET will train a cohort of 14 early stage researchers and 5 young experienced researchers in the full gamut of skills required for a career in photonics, including materials growth, device fabrication, characterisation, design, theory, and commercialisation.

The workshop will deal with theoretical background and modelling methods in photonics related to network activities: quantum dot mode-locked laser for communications applications, photovoltaic cells and photonic structures, mid-infrared lasers for gas sensing, optical coherence tomography. A special session will take place on Wednesday 11 April to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the invention of semiconductor lasers (1962).

The workshop is open to any interested students or researchers, with no registration fee. Please visit  the workshop web site http://fisicavolta.unipv.it/prophet.htm  for information and for the registration form. Early registration deadline is January 31st, 2012 (later registrations may be accepted, subject to hotel availability).

With best regards

Lucio Claudio Andreani
